What is glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP)?
Glass fiber-reinforced plastic, also known as GFRP or GFK, is a strong composite material made of plastic and glass fibers.
Where can GFRP be used?
GFRP has versatile applications and can be used in various industries as well as in the private sector.
What are the advantages of Fibrolux's GFRP products?
Our Fibrolux products are durable and lightweight, making them ideal for a wide range of applications. They offer a range of advantages, including corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, high temperature resistance, and many more.
What are the advantages of glass fiber-reinforced plastic over traditional materials like steel or aluminum?
Fibrolux's GFRP products provide high strength with significantly less weight compared to steel or aluminum. Additionally, GFRP is not susceptible to corrosion like metals and is resistant to various chemical substances. Our GFRP products also maintain their mechanical properties even under extreme environmental conditions such as UV radiation, moisture, and temperature fluctuations over a long period of time.
How can I work with GFRP?
For cutting smaller quantities, a conventional metal saw is sufficient. However, for higher volumes, it is recommended to use a diamond-coated saw blade with a diameter between 200-500 mm. Dust extraction is advisable during dry machining. Cutting speed: 1800 to 3600 m/min. For turning smaller quantities, standard equipment used for conventional metal processing is sufficient. For larger quantities, carbide tools, such as those used for brass or aluminum processing, should be used. Water cooling is generally recommended. Cutting speed: Similar to brass or aluminum. For punching, tools made of hardened steel should be used. However, the thickness of the workpiece should not exceed 10 mm. Maximum material thickness for punching: 10 mm. Threads should only be cut if the connection is not subjected to high tensile loads. The pull-out strength of threads in GFRP is approximately one-third of metallic threads, but sufficient strength for many applications can be achieved with precise fitting and the use of adhesive. Pipe and trapezoidal threads enable better power transmission than metric threads. GFRP can be easily and securely bonded with adhesives based on polyurethane and epoxy resin. However, the provided instructions should be followed. 1. Roughen the surface. 2. Remove dust. 3. Degrease with solvent. 4. Follow the adhesive application guidelines provided by the manufacturer. For riveting, the borehole should be slightly larger than the diameter of the rivet. The use of adhesives to increase the bonding strength is recommended. The use of adhesive increases the bonding strength. Self-tapping screws are sufficient for lightly loaded connections. For connections subjected to high loads, machine screws should be used. The use of adhesives to increase the bonding strength is recommended. Before applying paint, the surface to be painted should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased with a solvent. We recommend using a polyurethane-based paint system. The best paint results are achieved with 2-component polyurethane paints.
