CFRP is a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic in which carbon fibers are usually embedded in several layers as reinforcement in a synthetic resin matrix. Highly stressable components are produced - mainly for aircraft construction and racing. CFRP has very good machining properties (milling, drilling, sawing, grinding). CFRP can be used for high-temperature applications. Well suited for model making as CFRP has high strength with a low weight. Material is non-bending, extremely light, highly stable, non-corrosive, has desirable and characteristic carbon appearance due to fabric structure.
Advantages of CFRP components:
- low mass
- excellent fatigue strength
- high running speed
- smooth running due to vibration damping
- easy assembly and disassembly
Excellent sandwich structures can be realized with CFRP sheets. For example, a piece of foam can be covered on both sides with CFRP and then cut to shape. The result is an enormously light but nevertheless very stable construction.
